Energy Security and Clean Energy Transition Subject of Statement on Cooperation Issued by METI of Japan and the U.S. DOE

On Monday, January 9 (U.S. time),Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japanand theUnited States Department of Energydiscussed and issued a joint statement regarding energy security andcooperation for the clean energy transitions. Mr. Yasutoshi Nishimura, METI, held a meeting with H.E. Jennifer M. Granholm, United States Secretary of Energy. In light of the situation surrounding global energy security, they discussed strengthening clean energy cooperation, nuclear energy cooperation and other related issues, and announced a joint statement.

The main points of the joint statement are as follows.

• Support for upstream investment in the United States to enhance energy security.
• Development and construction of next-generation advanced reactors, maximizing use of existing reactors and building robust nuclear component and fuel supply-chains, including uranium fuel.
• Strengthening policies on clean hydrogen and ammonia, and further expanding ongoing cooperation between U.S. and Japanese companies.
• Recognizing the progress of the Japan-U.S. Clean Energy and Energy Security Initiative (CEESI) and developing this initiative
• Cooperation for Japan’s 2023 G7 Presidency
